Initiative for Peace
Initiative for Peace is a grass-root youth movement mainly operating in South East Asia but recently expanding to Europe as well. IFP’s mission is to connect youth with youth to train and empower them to become peacebuilders and take initiative in their communities.
It was founded in 2001 by a group of students and teachers at the United World College of South East Asia as an extracurricular activity. In 2017, a UWCSEA alumna from Cambodia, Kimheang Chham, organized the first school-independent IFP conference, setting off a range of independent conferences organized, crowdfunded and facilitated only by youth.
Since then, IFP has developed into a global movement with young people running their own peace conferences all around the world. To date IFP has trained youth and run IFP conferences in Kashmir, Timor Leste, Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Belarus. Additional conferences in Denmark, Russia, and Japan are planned to be facilitated in 2019. As each conference has about ten facilitators and 30-40 delegates, with about two conferences per year, more than 1500 young people have benefitted from the movement to date.
Want to join?
Our movement is always looking for facilitators and delegates! So get in touch with us, we would love to get to know you.
At the moment we have many different teams who are planning IFP conferences all over the world. Applications can be found on our facebook page and usually open in Spring or November of each year. All conferences are fully-funded (we are working very hard to make that possible) but we are usually unable to cover transportation and visa costs.
Does our movement sound like something you would like to bring to your country? We want to make that happen. It's very important to us that we work with people who know the customs of the countries we visit and always try to have locals on our facilitator team. Therefore, we need local contacts to expand. Are you a potential local contact?
We would love to hear from you.
